HNRS 1010: Gateway to University Honors
Gateway to University Honors was a class taken once a week in the fall semester of my freshman year. Topics discussed included the four thematic/focus areas of the University Honors Program (UHP): community engagement, global studies, leadership, and research and creative arts. The purpose of this course was to introduce me to the requirements for participation in UHP and learn how to actively reflect upon my experiences both in and out of the classroom.
Going into the semester, I assumed that this class would only be about UHP and what it has to offer. However, it was much more.
My favorite parts of Gateway to University Honors were the readings we did both in class and for homework. The readings discussed complex questions about how to live life to the fullest both academically and socially and how to get the most out of higher education. In class, we met in groups to talk about our reactions to each reading and I found it interesting that everyone seemed to take away a different point from each piece.
Through this course, I explored my career and life path in more detail then I had before attending the University of Cincinnati. Reflection was an internal tool I had used before, but I had seldom produced my reflections in writing or other forms. I plan to use reflection frequently in my undergraduate journey to help me find a fulfilling path for after graduation. Gateway to University Honors pushed me to examine how I will accomplish my goals and what I am currently doing to reach those goals.

Reflection on Personal Passions and Interests
The purpose of this assignment was to examine and explain a personal passion. I explain my passion, show how it is significant, demonstrate why it is important to me, and illustrate how I plan to pursue my passion in the future. I chose to feature this assignment because it helps to demonstrate who I am as a person and what I hope to accomplish.

Mock Self-Designed Experiential Learning Proposal Assignment
This assignment provided an opportunity to try writing a Self-Designed Proposal for Honors Experiences that are not pre-approved by the University Honors Program (UHP). Proposals help UHP decide if an experience meets the learning outcomes associated with the thematic areas to be considered for one of the five required Honors Experiences.
For my Mock Self-Designed Proposal, I used an experience that I will be submitting to UHP in December for review as an actual Honors Experience. I will actually be traveling abroad to Ecuador at the end of the spring semester!
